CONTROLLING ROACH PROBLEMS
Nobody likes roaches, but roaches are a common problem in New York City. How can you prevent a roach problem? If you do have roaches, how can you get rid of them? Below is some helpful tips to prevent roach problems
How to Prevent and Control a Roach Problem
Don't invite roaches into your home
- Caulk, weatherstrip, and repair holes around water pipes, baseboards, doors and windows. This is important in apartments, where roaches can move from unit to unit along pipes and cables.
- Put screens over windows, vents, floor drains and ducts. They can be roach highways and hideaways.
- Remove old boxes and papers. The fewer places roaches can hide, the better.
- Keep areas outside your home free of trash, wood piles and leaves.
- Use sticky (glue) traps to find areas where roaches may be hiding.
Don't feed roaches
- Store food in sealed containers. Never leave food, crumbs or trash uncovered anywhere in your home. Do not leave uneaten pet food out overnight. If you leave dirty dishes out overnight, put them in the sink and cover them with soapy water.
- Use a trash can with a tight lid. Avoid placing your trash can under the sink. Empty the trash can often. Put garbage in closed plastic bags.
- Rinse beverage and food containers before you recycle or throw them away.
Don't give roaches water
- Fix leaky faucets and drains.
Safely and correctly use pesticides
- Follow instructions on the pesticide label. If you have not used a stored pesticide recently, reread the label before use.
Tips for Using a Pesticide Yourself
After applying the tips in the checklist, if you decide to use a pesticide yourself, you will need to decide what pesticide to buy and how to use it.
What Type of Pesticide Should You Buy?
In addition to following the tips in the checklist, you can buy pesticide sprays, dusts, baits and traps that will help you control roaches. Buy a pesticide only if it is in the original manufacturer's can, bottle or box. Follow Pesticide Label Instructions!
MAX FORCE bait stations and Gel:
Avert and Intice Gel
Baits are low-risk pesticides and work well for roach control. If you use a roach bait, do not use a spray in the same area since the spray may repel the roaches and prevent the bait from doing its job.
A light dusting of boric acid or Mother Earth D dust (another low-risk pesticide) can be used behind and under appliances and sinks. |

Residual Crack & Crevice treatment of Invader, Intruder, or D-force.
Use pesticides in areas where roaches are most likely to be hiding, such as cracks in walls, baseboards and in cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom (after you've emptied the cabinets and cleaned them out). Also, apply pesticides behind the stove and refrigerator. DO NOT apply pesticides on hot surfaces or on areas where food is prepared, such as kitchen counter tops or in areas where children or pets can come into contact with them.
Before using a pesticide, remove food, dishes, silverware and children's toys from the area to be sprayed. Return these things to the sprayed areas and cabinets only after at least 5 hours. If any pesticide gets on these things, wash them before you use them.
NEVER put pesticides in containers such as drink bottles, spray bottles or salt shakers to store, give away or sell. Some people have mistaken pesticides in other containers for something else and have poisoned themselves and others.

COCKROACH TREATMENT TIPS
Baiting Tips
- Maxforce Gel provides faster control than stations however, stations provide better long-term control over extended periods of time.
- Don’t spray on top of bait placements and do not place baits on freshly sprayed surfaces.
- Smaller more frequent gel bait placements typically work better than larger less frequent placements.
- The size of gel bait placements should depend upon the cockroach species and the size of the infestation. Follow EPA label directions and understand that large roach species consume more bait and larger bait placements should be made when populations are high.
- A plastic applicator tip is the best choice when working around electrical equipment.
- Roach gel may stain some textiles and porous surfaces. Apply gel directly into cracks, crevices and hard-to-see areas if staining may be a problem.
Spraying Tips
- Always use a crack and crevice tip to better control crack and crevice spray applications.
Dusting Tips
- Apply dust in a very thin layer; thick piles, or clumps, will repel cockroaches.
- Fill dust applicators about half full so there is ‘head space’ in the applicator. This will allow you to better shake the contents and apply smaller amounts.
- Store dusts at a moderate temperature and avoid cold / damp conditions to prevent clumping in the applicator
- Be careful when applying dust near electrical motors or fans that may blow the dust to non-target areas.
- Save time by dusting voids and then sealing them up. You can skip these treated areas on future visits.
Granular Tips
- Near porches, patios, driveways, flowers gardens, sidewalks.
Around air conditioning units, garbage receptacles, trees and wood piles. [*]
[*] Sealing cracks and crevices will help eliminate harborage areas [*]
Large peridomestic cockroaches normally live outdoors but may enter and infest structures.
When these cockroaches are a concern, the insecticide formulations discussed in this
guide can be used to stop cockroaches outside, before they enter the structure

Tips for Hiring a Pest Control Company or Exterminator
You may decide to hire a pest control company instead of using pesticides yourself. All structural pest control companies are required by law to have a license from the New York State DEC. This license is to make sure pest control companies know how to safely use chemicals to get rid of roaches and other structural pests. When you hire a pest control company, make sure they have one. at www.broadwayexterminating.com we’ve been servicing The Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and all over New York CIty for almost 40 years. We are leaders in cutting edge technology like Cryonite Poison Free System, and Bed Bug Sniffing Dogs.

ROACH INSPECTION
Look for cockroaches, the signs they leave behind and conditions conducive for cockroach infestations. Signs of a cockroach infestation include the presence of fecal matter, egg cases, cast skins (exoskeletons), carcasses and live insects. This array of body parts and debris attracts roaches to the area. Although cockroaches will “nest” together in
large numbers, they are not social insects and will cannibalize each other when food becomes scarce. For these environments, world-renowned cockroach expert Dr. Austin Frishman recommends “Zone Management” as a strategy to make large jobs more manageable. Simply divide the location into smaller zones and tackle each zone, one at a time. When you identify different zones, keep in mind that cockroaches prefer to stay close to food and water sources; then inspect and treat each zone accordingly.
